INSTRUCTION TO AUTHORS〔2001年(平成13年)2月23日改訂〕

The Journal of the Japan Society for Oral Tumors (J Jpn Soc Oral Tumor)-the Official Journal of the Japan Society for Oral Tumors- welcomes original research papers on all aspects of oral oncology. Membership in the Japan Society for Oral Tumors is a prerequisite for submission to the journal. Papers may be submitted based on the following understanding : the content has not been published elsewhere and the Editors are responsible for their acceptance, rejection, and order of publication.

Copyright

In order for us to ensure maximum dissemination and copyright protection of material published in the journal, copyright must be explicitly transferred from the author to the Japan Society for Oral Tumors.

Articles

Original articles should not exceed 6000 words, including the abstract, references, tables and legend for figures, and illustrations. It is the responsibility of the author to cover all expenses for the costs of the manuscript, printing all figures, and the providing of reprints.

Manuscript Preparation

Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be typewritten in double spacing on A4-size paper (21X29.7cm), with a margin of at least 3cm all around. Four complete copies of the manuscript, and four sets of figures, should be submitted. Authors will be asked to submit "accepted" manuscripts on disk, together with the usual hard copies, to minimize the introduction of errors at the type setting stage, as well as to facilitate rapid publications.

Format

All manuscripts (except case Reports) should be prepared in the following order, with each section beginning on a separate page : title page, abstract, text, references, tables, legends to figures and illustrations.

The title page should give the following information : (1) title of the article, (2) full name of each author, (3) department and institution to which the work should be attributed, (4) full name of the chief or instructor, (5) full name and address of the correspondence author, to whom all editorial inquires and offprint requests should be made, as well as the telephone and fax numbers at which he or she can be contacted.

The abstract should be written in Japanese (not to exceed 1600 characters) and/or the Japanese original abstract should have its English translation on a separate sheet. The abstract should be comprehensible without reference to the text. The background, purpose, method and subjects, essential results, and the principal conclusions, with a list, below, of three to five keywords for indexing purpose, should be Included.

The text should be arranged as follows : (1) Introduction, (2) Patients and Methods, or Materials and Methods, (3) Results, (4) Discussion, (5) Acknowledgment(s), The sections should describe : (1) the problem being addressed and the purpose of the study with reference to previous findings, (2) materials and methods used in the study in concise yet sufficient detail to allow the study to be replicated ; (3) main findings obtained, (4) conclusions drawn from the findings and implications for further research and clinical application, with a review of relevant published literature and other evidence.

In Case Reports, the abstract should be a brief summary of the content, without any subheadings. The text should be arranged as follows.:(1) Abstract, (2) Introduction, (3) Case Report, (4) Discussion.

References

The authors is responsible for a brief summary of the accuracy of the references. The references section should list only those sources of documents relevant to the research, numbered consecutively in order of appearance in the text, and quoted in the text as superscript numbers or identified by numbers in parentheses. Each reference should include the names and initials of authors (list all authors when two or less; when three or more, list only the first two and "et al".), the complete article title, the abbreviated journal names according to Index Medicus, volume, inclusive pages of the article, and the year of publication. Examples are given below.

Preparation of Nontext Material

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should be separately numbered and must be mentioned sequentially in the text. Mark with red ink on the right margin of the text where a table or figure should be inserted.

Each table should be on a separate sheet, with double-spaced typing, and numbered consecutively.

Figures refers to all illustrative materials, including photographs, drawings, and graphs. The number of a figure (in Arabic numbers), the first author's name, and the "top" of the figure should be indicated lightly on the back.

The legends to figures should be typed on a separate sheet, and they should not appear at the bottom or top of the figures themselves.

Abbreviations and Units

Abbreviations should be avoided whenever possible, except for standard units of measurements and standard abbreviations. All measurements should be expressed in S. I., except blood pressure, which will continue to be expressed in mmHg. For general usage, consult Scientific Style and Format : The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers, Sixth Edition (Cambridge University Press, 1994).

 

Disk Preparation

Disk

A 3.5-inch floppy disk that contains the text file should be submitted. The disk should be marked with the title, first author's name, details of the type of computer used (format type), and the software employed.

Submission of Manuscripts

Journal style

Manuscripts should be submitted in journal style. Review of manuscripts may be suspended for lack of conformity to the instructions described herein.

Cover letter

Submissions must be accompanied by a cover letter, signed by all authors, stating that the manuscript, in part or in whole, is not under consideration by another journal and has not been published before. Resubmissions must be accompanied by a cover letter detailing how the text has been revised to address the comments made on previously returned submissions.
